Flip, mirror, reverse — they all mean the same thing
It helps to clear up the words first, because people search for this a dozen different ways and worry they need a different tool for each. Flip, mirror, reverse, and invert (when someone means left-to-right, not colour) all describe the same operation: reflecting the image across a line. Nothing is added and nothing is removed. The pixels are rearranged so the picture faces the other way.
There are two directions you can reflect in:
- A horizontal flip mirrors the image left-to-right. The left edge becomes the right edge. This is the one people mean when they say "mirror," and it is the selfie fix.
- A vertical flip mirrors the image top-to-bottom, so it reads as a reflection rather than an upside-down rotation.
Rotating is a different thing, and the mix-up is common. Rotating spins the whole image around its centre, like turning a sideways phone photo 90 degrees to stand it upright. Flipping reflects it. The quick test: if your photo is lying on its side, you want rotate. If the writing in it is backwards, you want flip.

Why your selfie looks mirrored (and how to fix it)

When you hold up your phone, the screen shows you a mirrored preview, because that is what you are used to seeing in the bathroom mirror every morning. Most phones then save the photo mirrored to match that preview, which is why the text ends up backwards. Other people have never seen your mirrored face. They see the real, un-mirrored you. That gap is also why you sometimes think you look strange in a photo but fine in a mirror. Psychologists call it the mere-exposure effect: you prefer the version of your face you see most, and for your own face that is the mirror image.
The fix is a single horizontal flip. Mirror the selfie left-to-right and the text reads correctly, the parting sits where it belongs, and the face matches how the world actually sees you. Many phones also have a "Mirror front camera" setting under Camera settings. Turning it off stops new selfies saving reversed, though it does nothing for the photos you have already taken. Why some photos look sideways instead (EXIF orientation)
While we are here, it is worth knowing about a related problem that looks similar but is not a flip. Sometimes a photo shows upright on your phone and then appears sideways or upside down when you open it somewhere else. That is not something you did wrong.
Cameras store a small orientation tag, called EXIF orientation, that tells software which way up to show the picture. Some apps read the tag and turn the display for you; others ignore it and show the raw sensor orientation, which can be rotated 90 or 180 degrees. So the same file looks correct in one app and sideways in another.
If your problem is a sideways photo rather than a backwards one, you want rotate, not flip. Rotating 90 degrees bakes the correct orientation into the file itself, so it displays the right way up everywhere, tag or no tag. Use the rotate tool for that, then come back here if you also need to mirror it.
Flip an image on any device, no app needed
You do not always want to open a website, so here is how to flip a photo with the tools already on your device. Each of these keeps the photo on the device, the same as the browser tool.
Every phone and computer can flip a photo with its built-in editor.
Windows 10 and 11. Open the photo in the Photos app, click Edit image (the pencil icon, or press Ctrl+E), and open the Crop section, where there is a flip control that mirrors the image. If your version of Photos hides it, use Paint instead: open the image, find the rotate and flip icons on the toolbar, and choose Flip horizontal or Flip vertical. Save, and the flip is baked into the file.
Mac. Open the photo in Preview, choose Tools from the menu bar, and pick Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. It applies instantly. Press Command+S to save. Preview can also flip several photos at once: select them in Finder, open them together, select all in the sidebar, and the flip applies to the whole set.
iPhone. Open the photo in the Photos app and tap Edit. Tap the crop icon at the bottom (a square with arrows around it), then tap the flip icon in the top-left corner, which looks like a triangle split by a line. That mirrors the photo horizontally. Tap Done to save. iOS keeps the original, so you can always revert later.
Android. Open the photo in Google Photos, tap Edit, then Crop. Look for the flip icon among the rotate controls and tap it to mirror the image. Tap Save copy so you keep the original. The exact spot moves a little between phone brands, but it always lives with the rotate tools.

Flip an image in Photoshop, GIMP or Canva
If you already have an editor open, the flip is a menu item away.
In Photoshop, to mirror the whole picture use Image, then Image Rotation, then Flip Canvas Horizontal or Flip Canvas Vertical. To flip a single layer instead, select it and use Edit, then Transform, then Flip Horizontal. Flipping the canvas mirrors everything; flipping a layer mirrors only that piece, which is what you want when you are reversing one element in a composition.
In GIMP, the free alternative, use Image, then Transform, then Flip Horizontally or Flip Vertically for the whole image, or the Flip tool in the toolbox to mirror a selection or a layer.
Canva and similar web design tools have a Flip button that appears when you select an image, with Flip horizontal and Flip vertical options. These are fine when you are already building a design there. The catch with the big web editors is that they upload your image to their servers and usually push you toward an account. For a quick, private flip of a single photo with no sign-up, the browser tool is faster and keeps the file on your device.
Flipping an image for printing — the one people get wrong
This use case gets its own section, because getting it wrong wastes materials. If you are printing an image that will be pressed or applied face-down, you have to mirror it first, or the finished result comes out backwards.
Iron-on transfers press face-down, so mirror any text before you print.
The clearest example is an iron-on transfer. Heat-transfer paper is printed, then flipped over and pressed onto the fabric, so whatever you printed lands reversed on the shirt. Any text has to be mirrored on the printout so it reads correctly on the garment. The same is true for some heat-transfer vinyl work, where you press the design face-down, and for water-slide decals and temporary tattoos, which transfer in reverse.
If you cut heat-transfer vinyl on a Cricut or Silhouette machine, the same rule applies, and the software has a setting for it. Turn on Mirror for the mat before you cut any iron-on design, because the vinyl is cut face-up and then pressed face-down, so the letters have to be reversed on the mat to come out correct on the shirt. Regular sticker or paper vinyl that stays face-up does not need mirroring. Iron-on always does.
The rule is simple: if the image touches the surface face-down during transfer, mirror it before you print or cut. Flip the image horizontally, print the mirrored version, and the transfer reads the right way round on the final object. If you are not sure whether your particular method reverses the image, print a small test on plain paper, hold it up to a mirror, and check the text before you commit good transfer paper or vinyl to it.
Creative uses: reflections, symmetry and kaleidoscopes
Beyond fixing problems, a flip is a quick creative tool.

Mirror a landscape vertically and stack it under the original to fake a still-water reflection. Mirror a portrait or a pattern horizontally and place the two halves side by side to build a symmetrical, almost butterfly-like image. Repeat the mirror on both axes and you get the kaleidoscope look that turns up on album covers and posters. None of this needs a design background. It is the same horizontal and vertical flip you have already used, arranged next to the original.
Designers also flip an element for balance. If a photo has a person looking out of the frame, mirroring it so they face into the layout keeps the reader's eye on the page. It is a small move that makes a composition feel deliberate rather than accidental.
Flip several images at once
If you have a folder to reverse rather than a single photo, you do not have to repeat yourself for each one.

On a Mac, Preview flips a whole selection at once. On the web, load the set into a batch-capable tool, apply the same flip across all of them, and download them together. This comes up more than you would expect: a product photographer mirroring a set of shots so every model faces the same way, a teacher reversing a stack of worksheet scans, or a crafter preparing a sheet of iron-on designs that all need mirroring before printing. Doing them one at a time is fine for two or three. For twenty, batch it.
What about a GIF or a video?
A still-image flip tool mirrors a photo. An animated GIF is a stack of frames, so a plain image tool will usually flip only the first frame or turn it into a single still. To mirror the whole animation you need a GIF-aware editor that flips every frame. Video is the same idea again: to mirror a clip you want a video editor with a flip or mirror effect, since it has to reflect each frame in the timeline. For a normal photo, though, the browser flip is all you need.
When not to flip an image
A flip is harmless for most photos, but there are a few times it does more harm than good, and they are easy to miss.
Anything with text in it is the obvious one. Flip a photo that contains a shop sign, a book cover, a licence plate or a printed label, and that text turns backwards. That is exactly what you want when you are un-mirroring a selfie, and exactly what you do not want when the text was already the right way round. Look over the whole frame before you flip, rather than only the part you were focused on.
Brand logos deserve special care. A mirrored Nike swoosh or a reversed company logo looks wrong to anyone who knows it, and for a business it reads as careless. If the photo you are flipping has a recognisable logo in it, mirroring is usually the wrong call.
Scenes where left and right carry meaning are the third trap: a map, a diagram with labelled sides, a photo of traffic on a particular side of the road, or a before-and-after laid out left to right. Mirroring quietly reverses the meaning. When in doubt, ask whether anyone would notice the world had been turned back to front. If they would, leave it as it is.
Does flipping reduce quality?
No. A flip is one of the few edits that is genuinely lossless. All it does is rearrange the pixels you already have. It adds nothing and discards nothing, so the mirrored image is exactly as sharp as the original.
The only thing to watch is the file format you save to. Export as PNG and the result is pixel-for-pixel perfect. Export as JPG and there is a single light re-compression when the file is written, which is invisible for normal photos but worth knowing if you flip the same JPG back and forth many times. For a one-off flip, either format is fine.
Keeping your photos private
It is worth saying plainly, because most flip sites do the opposite: your photo does not need to be uploaded to be flipped. A browser-based tool reads the image on your own machine, mirrors it there, and hands it back, with nothing sent over the network. For a selfie, that might not matter to you. For a photo of a document, an ID, a child, or work you have not released, it should.
